Cyclone Idai swept through Southern Africa in March 2019, leaving terrible disaster in its wake. Severe flooding and devastation has affected an estimated 2.6 million people in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. The current official death toll is 350; that number is expected to rise exponentially, particularly in Mozambique. It has been reported as one of the worst weather-related disasters ever recorded in the southern hemisphere. ACT Alliance members have identified food security, nutrition, psychosocial support, and water and sanitation as priority areas of need at this time. Mission & Service partner the Zimbabwe Council of Churches tell us that the situation is now known to be worse than previously anticipated, with much higher levels feared of lives lost and property destroyed. A significant number of households affected include vulnerable groups such as women, children, the elderly, as well as people with disabilities and chronic illnesses. Critical institutions such as schools, hospitals, and police stations have been severely affected.
